Visitors to Bulwark Community Centre got hands on as part of an effort to promote a greener approach to growing food.
Organised by Monmouthshire County Council’s Be Community team and GAVO (Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations), the ‘grow your own produce’ event was supported by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
The Community Action Network workshop was aimed at anyone of any ability who was interested in sustainable food production or who may have already been growing their own produce.
Free training was given on making organic compost and its many uses, ‘no-dig’ gardening, improving the health of soil and even how to make your own sauerkraut.
Angharad Underwood from the Preservation Society attended as guest speaker for the session.
Angharad is a multi-award-winning producer of jam and runs courses across Wales. She has also started a children’s Cookalong Clwb, teaching primary school children to cook with their families.
One attendee said it was “very good” to hear tips on how to preserve food and reduce waste.
“As a parent, interesting to hear how important it is to encourage young children into the kitchen to prepare foods,” they said.
“By learning how to grow our own healthy and delicious food at home, we can help reduce the environmental impact of transporting food.”
The Chepstow Community Action Network empowers and supports community projects, benefiting people and the environment alike.
