Update: The Welsh Government has recently outlined the next steps for the 20mph speed limit throughout Wales in this press release.

We want to hear your feedback on 20mph speed limits in Monmouthshire, please use the response form below to submit your comments. This survey aims to gather feedback on locations that residents believe should be exempt or kept at 20mph.

All valid comments relating to roads that form part of Monmouthshire’s Public Adopted Highway System will be logged and reviewed once the updated exceptions guidance has been provided by the Welsh Government. We are expecting to receive this by the summer. Current guidance on setting exceptions to the 20mph speed limit can be found here.

Please be aware that we will not log any general comments about the 20mph National Policy, as this is a matter for the Welsh Government and Welsh Government Ministers. Additionally, if your comments relate to a Trunk Road, as these are not the responsibility of Local Authorities please instead email TrunkRoads20mph@gov.wales.

Further information on which roads are Trunk Roads can be found here.

The updated Welsh Government 20mph Speed Limits FAQ page can be found here.

The Senedd passed The Restricted Roads (20 mph Speed Limit) (Wales) Order 2022 legislation in 2022. This means speed limits on most restricted roads will reduce from 30mph to 20mph from September 2023.

Restricted roads include street lights placed no more than 200 yards apart. They are usually located in residential and built-up areas with high pedestrian activity.

Reducing the default speed limit from 30mph to 20mph in these areas could see a number of benefits, including:

  • a reduction in the number of road collisions
  • more opportunities to walk and cycle in our communities
  • helping to improve our health and wellbeing
  • making our streets safer
  • safeguarding the environment for future generations.
  • reduced severity of injury if collisions do occur

Wales is one of the first countries in the world and the first nation in the UK to introduce legislation to have a 20mph speed limit on roads where cars mix with pedestrians and cyclists.

These changes support:
