Some Assessments that may be used by Monmouthshire SpLD Service

If the SpLD Service is asked by a school to assess one of their pupils the tests below are some of the assessment tools which may be used.

The York Assessment of Reading Comprehension

This assessment looks at 3 components of reading; accuracy, rate and comprehension. It can give valuable information about the way a child reads.

The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT 4)

This test has the facility to assess Word Reading, Comprehension, Spelling and basic Maths Computation

The Diagnostic Test of Word Reading Processes

This test focuses on the underlying cognitive processes which aid the recognition and understanding of written words.

The Wide Range Intelligence Test (WRIT)

This assessment gives a measure of a person’s underlying cognitive abilities.

The Phonological Assessment Battery  (PhAB)

The PhAB assessment helps look at a pupil’s phonological skills and awareness and highlights areas of strength and weakness.

The Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing: CTOPP:

Assesses phonological awareness, phonological memory and rapid naming. Individuals with deficits in one or more of these kinds of phonological processing abilities may have more difficulty learning to read.

The British Picture Vocabulary Scale: BPVS

Assesses pupils receptive (hearing) vocabulary aged 3-16

Helen Arkell Spelling Test:

A single word spelling test developed for teachers and Educational Psychologists to use with individuals from 5 years to adult.
