The City of Sanctuary UK movement has awarded Council of Sanctuary status to Monmouthshire County Council in 2026, making it the first county council in Wales to receive this recognition.
The award reflects the council’s commitment to supporting people fleeing war and persecution. It was granted following an assessment by City of Sanctuary UK, a national movement that works to create a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum.
