Children under the age of three are eligible for a badge if they fall under either or both of the following criteria and can provide evidence from a healthcare professional:

  • A child who, on account of a condition must always be accompanied by bulky medical equipment which cannot be carried around with the child without great difficulty. Examples of this are ventilators, suction machines, feed pumps, oxygen administration equipment, continuous oxygen saturation monitory equipment or casts and associated medical equipment for the correction of hip dysplasia.
  • A child who, on account of a condition must always be kept near a vehicle at all times so that if necessary, treatment for that condition can be given in the vehicle or the child can be taken quickly in the vehicle to a place where such treatment is needed. Examples of this may be children with tracheostomies, severe epilepsy/fitting, children with highly unstable diabetes and special cases terminally ill children who can only access brief moments of outside life and need a quick route home.

If successful a badge will be issued up until the day after the child’s third birthday. After the age of 3 years a new application will need to be completed.
