Families across Monmouthshire will soon be able to apply for funded childcare for all two-year-olds, following the latest expansion of the Welsh Government-funded childcare offer.

From 2 November 2026, parents and carers of children aged two will be eligible for up to 12.5 hours of funded childcare each week from the term following their second birthday until the term following their third birthday, regardless of where they live in Monmouthshire.

The support is being introduced as part of the Welsh Government’s phased rollout of funded childcare for two-year-olds across Wales. It aims to help families with childcare costs, support children’s early development, and strengthen local childcare provision.

Monmouthshire County Council has welcomed the announcement, which will give more families access to affordable, high-quality childcare close to home.

Cllr Laura Wright, Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “This is welcome news for families across Monmouthshire. Expanding funded childcare to all two-year-olds will make a real difference by giving parents and carers greater support, while helping children benefit from early learning and play in a safe, nurturing setting.

“We know that access to affordable, high-quality childcare can have a positive impact on family life. This expansion will help ensure more children in Monmouthshire have the best possible start, while also supporting our local childcare providers.”

Deputy First Minister for Wales, Sioned Williams, said: “This investment shows we are accelerating our commitments to the families of Wales. Childcare costs in Wales are the highest in the UK and I am determined to help families all over Wales, while also supporting children’s development.

“We will continue to work closely with local authorities across Wales to roll this out everywhere.”
