Healthy and Sustainable Pre School Scheme
The Healthy and Sustainable Pre School Scheme (HSPSS) aimed at childcare provision, including playgroups, Cylch Meithrin, day nurseries, out of school clubs and childminders and acknowledges childcare settings as valuable contributors to children’s health and well-being.
The scheme supports and links with several key areas of work including, Curriculum for Wales, Flying Start; Estyn; CIW, Designed to Smile and the Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award.
A healthy childcare environment actively promotes and safeguards the physical, mental and social health and well-being of its community. This involves policy development, strategic planning, staff training, and considering the ethos, physical environment, and community relationships.

Health Promoting Schools
The Monmouthshire Health Promoting Schools Scheme is a partnership between Health and Education, which recognises that there are mutual benefits in children’s health and attainment to be gained through collaborative working. The scheme is part of the Welsh Network of Health and Wellbeing Promoting School Schemes and is accredited by Welsh Government.
A ‘Health Promoting School’ is one which takes responsibility for maintaining and promoting the health of all who ‘learn, work, play and live’ within it not only by formally teaching pupils about how to lead healthy lives but by enabling pupils and staff to take control over aspects of the school environment which influence their health.
It actively promotes, protects and embeds the physical, mental and social health and wellbeing of its community through positive action.
This can be achieved by policy, strategic planning and staff development about its curriculum, ethos, physical environment and community relations.

Community Focused Schools
Community Focused schools develop partnerships with a range of organisations, and make services accessible locally to families and the wider community. They use their facilities and resources to benefit the communities they serve, improve the lives of the children, strengthen families and build stronger communities. This might include opening up school buildings for use by local clubs and societies, opening school grounds for use by the wider community during weekends or school holidays, or inviting the local community into school to share skills or even food with the children.
