People across Monmouthshire who are interested in making a difference in their community and playing a greater role in local democracy are invited to attend a briefing session about becoming a County Councillor.
Ahead of the local elections in May 2027, Monmouthshire County Council is holding an information session for anyone considering standing for election and representing the people and places they care about.
County Councillors play a vital role in shaping local services, influencing decisions that affect residents’ daily lives, and acting as advocates for their communities. They work closely with residents, local organisations, and council officers to help ensure local voices are heard and represented.
The briefing session will provide an opportunity to learn more about the role of a councillor, how local government works, and the support available to those wishing to stand for election. Attendees will also hear first-hand from current councillors about their experiences of serving their communities.
The session will take place at County Hall, Usk, on Wednesday 9 December 2026 at 6.30pm, with the option to attend in person or remotely.
On 6 May 2027, elections will be held across Monmouthshire, with 46 County Council seats across 39 wards up for election. Elections will also take place for 290 seats across Monmouthshire’s 30 Town and Community Councils.
You do not need specific qualifications or previous experience to become a councillor. People from all backgrounds bring valuable perspectives to local government. What matters most is a commitment to your community, a willingness to listen, and a desire to help shape the future of Monmouthshire.
The briefing session will cover:
- What councillors do and how they represent their communities
- How the County Council operates and makes decisions
- How councillors work with council officers and local partners
- What a typical day in the role can involve
- Training, guidance and support available to councillors
- Life in the Council Chamber and the democratic process
- Experiences and advice from current councillors
