Monmouthshire County Council is working with schools, colleges, training providers and Careers Wales to understand what Year 11, 12 and 13 leavers are planning for their next steps.

The work is part of the Welsh Government’s Youth Engagement and Progression Framework, which helps young people move into education, employment or training.

During October, the council’s Inspire Next Steps team or Careers Wales may contact families by phone, email or a home visit. This is a routine check-in to confirm that a young person is settled or to offer guidance if they are unsure about their next step.

Friendly, informal drop-in sessions will also be held for young people who are not currently in education, employment or training, or who would like help exploring their options:

  • Monday, 26 October 2026, Monmouth Hub. 10am-1pm: Level 2 Customer Service course. 2pm-4pm: Drop-in support
  • Tuesday, 27 October 2026, Abergavenny Youth Centre (next to the skate park). 10am-1pm: Level 2 Customer Service course. 1pm-4pm: Drop-in support
  • Tuesday, 27 October 2026, The Zone, Caldicot. 10am–3pm. 10am-noon: Drop-in support. Quiet Time. Noon-2pm: Drop-in support
  • Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Chepstow Hub. 10am–2pm: Drop-in support

A range of employability qualifications can be delivered at any of our sessions, for example Customer Service and Food Hygiene. For more information, get in touch via employmentskills@monmouthshire.gov.uk

Cllr Laura Wright, Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Leaving school is a significant milestone, and while many young people have clear plans for what comes next, others may still be exploring their options. We want every young person, and their family, to know they are not on their own.

“Whether someone is moving into college, training, employment or simply deciding their next step, our team is here to offer practical advice, encouragement and support. A simple conversation can make a real difference, helping young people build confidence, explore opportunities and find the path that is right for them.”
