Pupils from across Monmouthshire came together to showcase their creativity, teamwork and coding skills at a dynamic LEGO STEM event held at Caldicot School on Thursday, 18 June 2026.
Organised by Monmouthshire County Council’s STEM programme, the event gave learners the opportunity to experience a LEGO League-style competition in a fun, supportive and low-pressure environment.
Throughout the day, teams took part in a range of hands-on challenges designed to test their problem-solving, engineering and programming skills. Activities included timed mat-based coding challenges, practical event challenges using sensors, and a high-energy “Hopper Race” finale, where teams competed to build the fastest moving design.

The event encouraged learners to apply their STEM knowledge in a real-world context, helping to build confidence, resilience and collaboration. All participants were recognised for their efforts, with certificates and badges awarded to celebrate their achievements at the end of the day.
As well as developing technical skills, the event aimed to inspire curiosity and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and maths, while bringing schools together to share learning and celebrate success.

The impact of this work is already being seen beyond the county. Following their regional victory at St Fagans, pupils from Cross Ash Primary recently represented South Wales at the First Lego League UK Finals in Harrogate, where they were named the highest-performing team from Wales in the robot game category. Using LEGO Spike Prime kits and 3D printing technology provided through Welsh Government funding, the team developed an innovative protective exoskeleton to help safeguard fragile archaeological artefacts in transit, before going on to finish third in the knockout tournament after competing against teams from France and Brazil.
Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Laura Wright, said:
“Events like this play an important role in inspiring young people to explore science, technology, engineering and maths in a practical and engaging way. By bringing learning to life through creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, pupils are able to build confidence and develop skills that will support them in the future.”
The council would like to thank staff at Caldicot School for hosting the event and supporting its delivery, as well as all the schools and learners who took part.
