A Monmouthshire Welsh-medium school has received a glowing report following a recent Estyn inspection.
Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin, in Caldicot, was described by Estyn as “a family community that provides an inclusive and caring environment”.
The school’s motto ‘Dysgu chwilfrydedd, byw gyda pharch, tyfu gyda’n gilydd yn ein cymuned Gymraeg’ reflects the supportive way the school is run.
Pupils were reported as feeling safe and happy at school; behaving well and showing maturity and respect for each other.
Headteacher Michelle Ward, the report notes, is a passionate leader who sets high expectations for staff and pupils.
Staff at Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin work together successfully to provide pupils with an interesting curriculum, with most pupils making sound progress in developing literacy, numeracy and digital skills, as well as other skills.
The curriculum is broad, relevant and rooted in meaningful learning activities that build on many skills successfully. A whole-school approach to developing creativity is very strong, with activities across the curriculum providing beneficial opportunities for pupils to apply wider skills.
Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin hosts the Welsh Late Immersion Centre, which offers intensive Welsh language education that helps children achieve the fluency necessary for transitioning to a Welsh-medium school.
Monmouthshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Laura Wright, said: “This report from Estyn just highlights the great work being done at Ysgol Gymraeg Y Ffin.
“It is a testament to all the hard work being put in by the staff and pupils at the school every day.”
