A new consultation on Monmouthshire’s Active Travel Network Map has just launched, and Monmouthshire County Council would like your views.

Whether you walk, wheel, or cycle, your feedback will help improve everyday routes in and around seven areas of the county: Abergavenny and Llanfoist, Caldicot, Chepstow, Gilwern, Magor with Undy, Monmouth and Usk.

The Active Travel Network Map (ATNM) shows existing routes and highlights future routes planned for upgrades or development over the next 15 years. It’s part of a Wales-wide effort to make local journeys healthier and more sustainable, supported by the Active Travel (Wales) Act 2013.

Monmouthshire’s current map was approved in 2022, and it is now time to update it to reflect recent progress and plan for the future with your input. All Welsh councils are required to regularly review and improve their active travel networks. Improvements may include creating new routes or upgrading existing ones. For example, resurfacing paths, widening footways, or adding features like dropped kerbs and tactile paving to improve accessibility.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing & Tourism, with responsibility for Active and Inclusive Travel, Cllr Sara Burch, said: “This is an important opportunity for residents and those who work in Monmouthshire to help us ensure our active travel network is as effective as it can be. We want to know which routes you think are missing, which you feel are not needed, which could be improved and which might need changing. So, if you live in or around any of the seven areas on the map and would like to be able to walk or wheel for more of your journeys, we really want to hear from you. This is not just for cyclists, we really want to hear from parents, children, mobility scooter users and disabled people about what works and what doesn’t.

“We have made huge progress in improving routes, thanks to Welsh Government funding, and there are projects underway across Monmouthshire, from a new dropped kerb or pedestrian crossing to the Llanfoist active travel bridge. The map and local communities set future priorities, so your views help make sure the routes that matter most to you are included.

“Please help us ensure these routes work for everyone who want to use them and have your say before the consultation closes on Sunday 30 August.”
