As parents of children preparing to start school next year consider their options, more children will have the opportunity to gain a bilingual education from September 2024.

A new Welsh medium seedling school in Monmouth will be opening thanks to funding from the Welsh Government.

If you are the parent of a child aged between two and five years, living in Monmouth or the surrounding area, why not consider an education in Welsh for your children?

It is well-known that children pick up new languages more easily than adults and growing up bilingual will stand your child in good stead when they eventually enter the professional workplace.

Many employers look favourably upon candidates who can speak more than one language, with particular interest given to Welsh by those businesses based in the country.

Creating Welsh medium provision in Monmouth is central to Monmouthshire County Council’s contribution to the Welsh Government strategy of creating one million Welsh speakers by 2050.

It will also achieve the targets in the council’s current Welsh Education Strategic Plan 22-32 and support our broader strategy to grow the demand for Welsh medium education across the county.

The Minister for Education and Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles, said: “I am pleased to see work begin on this fantastic new Welsh medium primary school, which is being delivered thanks to our Welsh Medium Capital Grant funding.

“It will ensure more young learners will have the opportunity to develop their Welsh language skills at an early age and will help us meet our ambition of one million Welsh speakers by 2050.”

Cllr. Martyn Groucutt, Cabinet Member with responsibilities for Education, said: “The Welsh language is so important, and seeing Welsh medium provision being introduced is very reassuring.

“It is so positive to see the number of Welsh speakers in Monmouthshire is increasing.

“The opening of a Welsh medium primary school is the perfect way to ensure your child grows up with the gift of Welsh.”
