A number of services are run through Early Years including Flying Start, the Acorn Project, Family Information Service, Pre-School Admissions, Childcare contacts, Early Education funding, Childcare Sufficiency Assessment and more. Our Family Information Service (MonFIS) is a free, impartial service available to parents, carers, families and professionals throughout Monmouthshire. MonFIS provides information about all forms of childcare, early years, parent and toddler groups, parenting support, local activities and events and services for children and families. In May 2013, MonFIS achieved the NAFIS Families First Quality Award.

Children in Wales are entitled to free pre-school education for 5 sessions a week from the term following their third birthday until they start school. This education can be accessed at one of our 11 Local Authority nurseries or one of our 29 non-maintained approved providers; which includes playgroups, day nurseries, a cylch meithrin and independent schools.
Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded programme which aims to give children under the age of four in our most deprived communities a “flying start” in life.
The support offered includes: Intensive health visiting support from a dedicated Flying Start Health Visitor; Evidence based parenting support and programmes: High quality part-time childcare for 2 year olds in English and Welsh language settings; Early language development support and programmes including Language and Play, Chatty Chimps and Tot Talk sessions. Flying Start currently operates in North Abergavenny and Overmonnow and will soon be expanding into Caldicot and Chepstow.
Parents and children up to the age of 4 years living in social housing postcodes in identified areas of need are eligible for Flying Start.
This project aims to improve parenting skills and confidence in disadvantaged families. It is funded by Families First, a Welsh Government initiative which aims to reduce child poverty. The project works with families in need who have one or more child aged 4-11 across Monmouthshire, and also with families who have one or more child aged 0-3 in areas that are not covered by the Flying Start initiative. The Acorn Project is based in North Abergavenny, Overmonnow, West End, and Thornwell. The project provides: parenting programmes , parenting support, learning support, mobile childcare provision and support to access services. Business support and start up grants are available for new childcare providers. Each term we hold Childminder Briefing Sessions for prospective childminders. Information about becoming a childminder and future dates of briefing sessions are available.
