The Council Tax Reduction scheme replaced Council Tax Benefit from 1 April 2013.The UK Government has cut the funding for the new scheme by 10 per cent and devolved responsibility to the Welsh Government.

The Council Tax Reduction scheme helps people on a low income pay Council Tax. You may apply whether you rent or own your home, or live rent-free. In Wales the maximum level of support that eligible claimants can receive will be 100 per cent of the Council Tax charge. This is in line with the previous Council Tax Benefit scheme and means that  in 2014/15 Council Tax payers  will continue to get any benefit entitlement based on the full charge.

The amount of reduction you may receive depends on your income and household circumstances. You could qualify if you are in receipt of benefits or if you are working on a low wage. If you have savings of over £16,000 you can’t normally get a Council Tax Reduction.

If you are entitled to a Council Tax Reduction, your Council Tax bill is reduced.
