Every child in the UK of statutory school age, that is a child aged between 5 years and 16 years, is entitled to an education. When a child or young person is receiving an education, they have the opportunity to fulfil their educational potential, but they are also in an environment which enables local agencies to safeguard and promote their welfare and emotional ‘Well Being’

Children and young people not receiving a suitable education are at increased risk of a range of negative outcomes that could have long term damaging consequences for their life chances.

Children ‘missing from education’ (CME) refers to all children or young people of statutory school age who are ‘not on a school roll’, ‘nor being educated otherwise’ for example privately or in alternative provision such as Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) or Elective Home Ed (EHE) ucation and ‘who have been out of any educational provision for a substantial period of time. (usually agreed as four weeks or more).

The Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a statutory duty on local authorities in England and Wales to make arrangements to identify children and young people of compulsory school age missing education within their area.

If you believe that a child is not receiving any education or does not appear to be attending school regularly you must contact us straight away. You do not have to give your personal details, but if you do, these details will be treated with the utmost confidence and not revealed to anyone other than Education Directorate Officers responsible for dealing with children missing education.

By reporting your concern to us you are ensuring the safety and well-being of some of the most vulnerable young people within the community. When we receive your report, we will try to trace the child through various channels.

If we are satisfied that the child is registered at a school or receiving a suitable education, we will take no further action. If necessary, we will also provide support to help the child get back into school.
