Grassroutes is a flexible, demand-responsive community bus service that provides journeys on request. The service operates low-floor, fully accessible vehicles suitable for all passengers and is open to everyone in the community through a membership scheme.
How the Scheme Works
Members can book a journey by calling our freephone number between 9am and 2pm. Bookings should be made 24–48 hours in advance by contacting the Grassroutes Support Team on 0800 085 8015.
Scheduled routes operate daily between main towns, with flexibility to adapt based on passenger demand. Services generally run Monday to Friday, between 9am and 2pm, covering all major towns and surrounding rural areas across Monmouthshire.
Newport Services
We also operate two vehicles exclusively for Newport residents. These services run between 9am and 2pm, Monday to Friday. All journeys must start and finish within the Newport area. Newport residents can book up to 24 hours in advance only, so bookings should be made the day before travel.
Membership Fees
From 1 April 2026, membership will cost £10 per person per year.
All existing members who joined before 1 February 2026 will be required to reapply by 1 April 2026.
Fares
From 1 July 2016, the fare structure is:
- £3.00 for a single journey
- £5.00 for a return journey on the same day
- 50% discount for passengers under 16
Concessionary passes are accepted on all daily Grassroutes services.
Journey Allocation
All journey requests are assessed using a criteria-based system to ensure fair, consistent, and efficient use of the service. Priority is given to essential travel, including medical and dental appointments, food shopping, and other journeys that support passengers’ health, wellbeing, and daily living needs.
Important Information
Journey requests are not guaranteed. If services are fully booked at the time of request, bookings may be refused. We strongly recommend booking as early as possible.
The Grassroutes policy is available on request.
