Come along to our drop-in session on Wednesday, 18 November 2026, at St James Community Hall, Wyesham, between 2pm and 7pm. It’s an opportunity to find out more, ask questions and speak directly with council officers.
We are developing a permanent repair for the A4136 Staunton Road after routine maintenance revealed significant gaps beneath the road surface, raising concerns about the stability of the road and the slope below it.
Following the discovery, we introduced temporary traffic management while further investigations took place, with the aim of keeping the road open as much as possible.
Over the last few months, alongside specialist engineering advisers, we’ve been investigating the cause and extent of the problem to identify a suitable long-term repair.
Work so far has included ground investigations, surveys, engineering assessments, wildlife and habitat studies, and discussions with utility companies. These investigations will allow us to develop of a permanent repair scheme.
Where are we now?
- Investigations are continuing to assess how best to stabilise the road and slope.
- We are developing detailed repair plans, and work to obtain the necessary approvals is progressing.
- Wildlife and habitat surveys are being completed to support construction.
What happens next?
Before major construction can begin, the team needs to complete the detailed plans, surveys and necessary approvals. The next steps are to:
- Finalise the detailed plans for the permanent repair
- Review the proposed timetable for construction and look for opportunities to bring work forward where possible
- Complete wildlife and habitat surveys and secure the necessary licences and approvals
- Continue working with utility companies to identify whether any services need to be protected or moved
- Update cost estimates, assess risks and develop arrangements for carrying out the work
- Continue monitoring the road and slope to assess safety and identify whether any changes to traffic arrangements are needed.
Three areas have been identified as requiring stabilisation works, which will require full closures while the work is carried out. We will do everything we can to keep the duration of these closures to a minimum and will work closely with our communities and businesses to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Keeping you updated
