Monmouthshire County Council is pleased to announce the opening of the final section of the active travel route connecting Kingswood Gate to Monmouth town centre.

The new walking and wheeling route, running from Midsummer Way, Kingswood Gate, to Wonastow Industrial Estate Road, is now open for use, and completes the route to Monmouth via the already-constructed Williams Field Lane active travel route.

The route has been constructed to provide an accessible route away from the highway, to connect homes and destinations.

MCC was awarded £338,000 for the construction of this scheme from the Welsh Government (WG) Safe Routes in Communities (SRiC) Fund 2025-26.

The route was designed using WG Active Travel Fund and Section 106 funds from the housing estate. With the help of the warm and dry weather over the summer, Tom Pritchard Contracting completed construction of the route in November 2025.

This follows the development of the Kings Fee route and play park alongside Overmonnow School, Rockfield Road junction outside the Bridges Centre and a walking and wheeling crossing at the industrial estate to connect the whole route.

The route is of a “no dig” construction, meaning it has been built up on top of the existing ground to limit impact on the surrounding ecology of the SINC (Site of Importance for Nature Conservation) it crosses, as well as raising the route above potential flooding. The route also has a drainage swale running alongside it, which was reseeded with locally gathered seeds.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing & Tourism, Cllr Sara Burch, said: “It’s fantastic to open the new active travel route in Monmouth. The route will allow the residents of Kingswood Gate to choose walking or wheeling to access vital services and the town’s attractions.”
