Monmouthshire County Council has celebrated the completion of improvement works at Linda Vista Gardens in Abergavenny and the achievement of a Green Flag Award.

The event, held on 13 August 2026, marked the completion of the Welsh Government-funded Brilliant Basics project, which has delivered investment in one of Abergavenny’s most valued parks and gardens.

The project has restored views across Castle Meadow towards the Blorenge and Little Skirrid, created new planting areas, and introduced interpretation panels to help visitors explore the gardens’ history, trees and landscape.

A new conservation plan has also been developed to support the long-term protection of Linda Vista Gardens, with research uncovering new information about the former owners of Linda Vista House and its gardens.

The Green Flag Award recognises well-managed parks and green spaces and is regarded as the international quality benchmark for recreational outdoor spaces.

A key factor in achieving the award was the strong partnership between Monmouthshire County Council, the Friends of Linda Vista Gardens, Abergavenny Town Council and other stakeholders.

The Friends of Linda Vista Gardens have played a vital role in caring for the gardens through their dedication, practical support and advocacy, helping ensure the site remains a welcoming and much-loved green space at the heart of the community.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, Councillor Catrin Maby, said:

“Linda Vista Gardens is a special place for Abergavenny, and this recognition is a tribute to everyone who has helped care for it over many years. I would particularly like to thank the Friends of Linda Vista Gardens, alongside our partners and stakeholders, whose commitment and hard work have made such an important difference.

“The Green Flag Award reflects the strength of partnership working and recognises the collective effort that goes into protecting and enhancing this beautiful space for residents, visitors and wildlife.”

The celebration brought together volunteers, contractors, council staff and project partners who contributed to the improvement works.

The Green Flag was raised by Owen Derbyshire, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, alongside volunteers, town and community councillors, grounds staff and invited guests.
