Monmouthshire County Council is implementing traffic management systems on the Gilwern Viaduct following a recent monitoring assessment which revealed structural concerns.
To safeguard public safety and maintain the bridge’s continued operation, immediate remedial actions are being undertaken.
The following traffic measures will be implemented on the bridge from Monday, 19 January, until further notice:
- Weight Restriction: The bridge will have a 3.0 tonne weight limit.
- Lane Reduction: Traffic will be reduced to a single lane running across the bridge. Temporary traffic lights will manage traffic.
- Pedestrian access: Pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge.
These precautionary measures are crucial to reduce stress on the bridge and ensure the safe passage of all vehicles.
The Council is collaborating with specialist consultants to formulate both medium-term and long-term solutions to resolve the identified structural issues.
The condition of the bridge and the effectiveness of the traffic management measures will be continuously monitored throughout this time.
At present, no completion date can be confirmed, with the new traffic management arrangements anticipated to remain in effect for an extended period.
