This year’s Velothon Wales has been the best yet in Monmouthshire with local people taking part, volunteering and cheering on cyclists travelling through the beautiful county.

Support in Usk and Goytre for example was tremendous with local people hosting street parties with their neighbours and wandering to pubs and cafes. It was wonderful to see so many people cheering, playing music and waving flags to support the 9,000 cyclists enjoying the Monmouthshire countryside. At the feed station in Usk residents volunteered to support cyclists with snacks and water. The town looked stunning decorated in brightly decorated bikes and beautiful flower displays.

Rolling road closures for the pro event this year meant that county roads were closed for a shorter amount of time to minimise disruption to residents..

Cllr Bob Greenland, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said: “I would like to thank all Monmouthshire residents and staff who were involved in this year’s Velothon, the atmosphere in the county was amazing with people cheering, waving flags, displaying decorated bikes and bunting – what a great way to encourage more people to get on their bike and feel like a pro rider for the day.  Monmouthshire is brilliant at welcoming and hosting major events and I look forward to more sporting events to celebrate all that Monmouthshire has to offer in the future.”
