A Message from Trading Standards
Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of rogue traders preying on the desperate and vulnerable after Storm Claudia..
In the coming weeks, householders and business owners should not agree to work from tradespeople who knock on their doors uninvited touting for business.
Historically, this type of offender will attempt to capitalise on recent events, often creating an inflated sense of urgency or risk meaning a householder or business will feel pressurised to agree to the work.
If someone knocks at your door and tells you your house needs repairs or maintenance of any kind, you need to be suspicious and close your door.
Trading Standards advise people facing paying for repairs to get recommendations from friends or family, and always try to source three quotes.
Those affected can consider approved trader schemes to find businesses to help with repairs. These include:
- TrustMark – https://www.trustmark.org.uk/homeowne
- Buy with Confidence – https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
- Which – https://trustedtraders.which.co.uk.
- For residents over 60 – Care and Repair – https://careandrepair.org.uk/
Further information on finding reputable businesses can be found on the Citizens Advice Website – Find a trader and check you can trust them – Citizens Advice
Monmouthshire County Council also encourage residents to report any concerns they have about suspicious doorstep callers calling in their area to Citizens Advice Consumer Centre on 0808 223 1133, or 0808 223 1144 for Welsh language calls.

Waste and Recycling
Update 14:30 – 21 November
Please note that the additional collections across flood-affected areas over the weekend of 22/23 November will be reduced.
While we will still have officers present, this will allow our teams to take a well-deserved break. Over the past week, the same teams involved in the clean up have also been out gritting the roads due to the cold snap and keeping Monmouthshire moving.
We have continued to hear the support for frontline workers this week, each and every thank you is greatly appreciated by the team.
Thanks to the collective efforts of our teams, partners, residents, and businesses, we have collected over 108 Tonnes of waste so far.
Skips placed across Monmouth Town Council (MTC) will also be available to residents and businesses this weekend. MTC are making arrangements for replacement skips to support the ongoing clean up.
Additional collections will be amplified again from Monday, 24 November.
Residents will be able to book slots at our Waste and Recycling Centres through MyMonmouthshire
Update 11:00 – 20 November
Please take extra care when presenting household waste for collection.
As we continue to assist with the clean-up following the flooding, we kindly ask that residents and businesses only place damaged items out for collection.
For any undamaged items you wish to dispose of, please use your regular waste collection day or visit one of our Recycling and Waste Centres.
We truly appreciate your efforts in cleaning up! To help our collection teams, please leave only the damaged items. Together, we can make this process as efficient as possible for everyone involved.

Roads and Pathways
Road Closures
Route: R7
Road Closed due to landslip
Route: Lower Cwm Nant Gam Road, near Llanelly Hill
Road Closed due to landslip – A landslip off a steep rock face has occurred above the Lower Cwm Nant Gam road near Llanelly Hill. To stabilise the rock face, anchors and netting will need to be installed via roped access (Site 1). These works require NRW assent. For NRW to review the assent application for the main works, vegetation clearance to the rock face is needed. These works were completed during a recent closure, while an extreme weather event caused further rockfalls and the failure of an adjacent slope (Site 2). Upon inspection, with the vegetation now removed and the condition of the rock face underneath exposed, Site 1 has been assessed as very unstable, with a high probability of further rockfalls and failure, especially during periods of rainfall. For public safety reasons, the road will need to remain closed until works to stabilise the slope are complete. As mentioned above, this will be subject to NRW SSSI assent, which is underway. Site 2 is currently work in progress. It is hoped that localised scaling and removal of a number of trees and stumps should be sufficient, but it is possible that netting will also be required here. As Site 2 is not within the SSSI, we can proceed with these stabilisation works as soon as we have availability from the Contractor.

Swimming Pool Closure – Abergavenny
Following further investigations into the damage caused by Storm Claudia, the reopening date has changed. We are now aiming to reopen the swimming pool on the first weekend of December, instead of the date previously shared. We’ll confirm this as soon as work begins and timelines are clearer.
Refunds for affected customers will be processed and reflected in your December direct debit payment.
Updates about swimming lessons will be sent via Course Pro email—please check your Junk folder so you don’t miss anything important.
Thank you for your patience while we resolve these issues. We’ll share another update once we have confirmation from contractors, who are also addressing wider storm-related challenges across the county.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
