Basic Skills
Introduction to our Basic Skills Service
Basic Skills (also called essential skills) are "the ability to read, write and speak and to use mathematics at a level necessary to function at work and in society in general''.
We run classes in English (including ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages) and maths across Monmouthshire. These classes go up to the equivalent of GCSE.
They are suitable for anyone who wants to brush up English and maths skills, for example:
-
To get on at work or look for a better job.
- To help children or grandchildren with their homework.
- To help them succeed in other training courses.
- To use computers and the internet.
- To manage their money better.
Every student has an Individual Learning Plan so they work on the skills which are most important to them, at a pace which suits them. Some of our students want to improve their skills in areas such as grammar, report-writing or numeracy. Others may need a qualification, help with the literacy/numeracy requirements of an NVQ or other course.
Monmouthshire Adult and Community Education (MACE) provides a range of English and maths classes in the community. MACE works in partnership with other organisations, and works with local schools to develop the basic skills of parents and other family members.
Try our 'can do' checklist to see if you need to brush up your own skills.
