Meet the Tutor: Philomena Vaughan

I have been teaching in Monmouthshire since 1985, at present I am teaching in Chepstow, Caldicot and Usk.  I am a University lecturer and a qualified professional artist.  I come from a long line of artists, my father and his family were all great painters.

I have a BA and a PGCE qualification. I was honoured with a Welsh Adult Tutor Award in 2003 from NIACE.

I teach watercolour, acrylic, pastels and pen and ink – during school terms, beginners and advance levels.

I also have one day workshops teaching oil painting and techniques in painting watercolour – at all levels

I am a great believer in recycling and have Upcycling classes.

10 week courses are available plus day workshops.

I encourage my students to get involved in their local community projects and paint local landscapes.

Some of my students in Usk are involved in the Velothon Wales project, which involves painting on polycarbonate discs to put on bicycle wheels. These will be on displayed all around Usk for 2 years.

I enjoy teaching and get great pleasure in seeing my students develop their skills in painting, I put an art exhibition each year at each centre and encourage my students to exhibit their work.

I love experimenting with paint and colour whether it is on paper, canvas or silk.

I often sit on the beach in Aberporth and the surrounding area, painting the sea-shore and surroundings landscapes. I also enjoy painting still life and abstract.
