We are here to offer help and advice to the farming community in Monmouthshire.
We work to improve the health and welfare of livestock whilst on farm, in transit and at markets.
The service also deals with the licensing of certain establishments where animals are kept.

What to do if you find a stray dog
A stray dog can be defined as one that is in a public place, not under the charge of its keeper. If you find a stray dog, the following options are available:
- Seek to return the dog to its owner if wearing a collar and identification tag
- Take the dog to a vet to check if micro chipped; if the owner can be identified the dog should be returned to owner
- The dog can be taken to our nominated kennels, Usk Kennels, Llantrisant
- Alternatively, contact 01633 644126 for a dog to be picked up by our dog collection service. The collection service is available Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday 9am to 4.30pm.

For collecting your dog:

- Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm
- Contact the kennels direct for Bank Holiday and Christmas opening times
What to do if you have lost your dog
We will maintain a register of all dogs that have been reported to us as found and/or impounded by our holding kennels. Please contact us on 01633 644126 or Usk Kennels on 01291 675459 to check if your dog is being held there.
Charges for impounded dogs
If your dog is being held at Usk Kennels there will be a release fee of £30 payable per dog to Monmouthshire County Council in addition to any kennelling, veterinary fees and any other costs incurred. Kennelling costs are £6 per day per dog and will be held for up to 7 days. Payment to be made direct to the kennels by cash, credit or debit card, cheques are not accepted.
Responsible dog ownership
Owners are legally required to ensure that their dog wears a collar and tag detailing the owner’s name and address. It is now the law that all dogs must be microchipped by the ages of 8 weeks and the details kept up to date. Owners must keep their dogs under control at all times and not allow them to stray or foul pavements or public areas.
How can I get my dog micro-chipped?
In partnership with the Dogs Trust, we hold regular micro-chipping sessions in an effort to reduce the number of strays that are impounded each year.
You can get your dog micro-chipped for a cost of £9.99 or free if you receive a means tested benefit. For further information contact our recommended kennels: 01633 644126.
