Monmouthshire County Council held the first of a series of fostering events at Shire Hall in Monmouth on Friday 25th November to encourage people to foster local children and young people.

There are many options available to potential foster carers from short term or long term foster care, short breaks, parent and child, therapeutic care and supported lodgings. Potential foster carers are welcome to apply whatever their ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, or marital status.

Future drop in sessions are being held at the follows times:

Abergavenny Market 6th December 10am-3pm, Waitrose Abergavenny  7th December 1pm-6pm, Caldicot Hub 9th December 10am – 3pm. Waitrose Monmouth 12th & 16th December 1pm-5pm.

Monmouthshire’s cabinet member with responsibility for its fostering service, Councillor Tudor Thomas said: “Monmouthshire County Council’s fostering team is called ‘Foster Wales Monmouthshire’, which is part of the national network of not-for-profit Local Authority fostering services across Wales. I would like to thank each and every person who is considering caring for our local children so we can keep them close to their friends, schools and places they know, this is a huge factor in their future happiness.”

Cllr Angela Sandles, Cabinet member for engagement added: “I really enjoyed spending time with the team who were chatting to people outside the Shire Hall, Monmouth on Friday. I would urge anyone thinking about fostering to get in touch – it can be enormously rewarding. We have amazing staff who will answer all your questions and support you.”

Anyone considering fostering could make a difference to children like Tom:

Tom (not his real name) lives in a children’s home because there is not a foster home available for him. He is described as a funny, polite and kind young boy. When he grows up Tom wants to be a firefighter or a carpenter. Tom wants to live with someone who loves animals and makes him feel ‘just like any other child’.
