Carers Week

Carers Week is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

A carer’s assessment gives you the opportunity to talk to a social care professional about what could make caring easier for you and what help and support is available for you. It is not an assessment of your ability to care and you do not have to pay for the assessment.
To apply, please phone the social services duty line:

  • Monmouth: 01600 773041
  • Abergavenny: 01873 735885
  • Chepstow or Caldicot: 01291 635666

During the assessment, a member of staff will talk to you away from the person you look after, if you wish.  You will be able to talk to them about things you find difficult and how you are coping.
You are likely to be given a form in preparation for the interview which you can fill in, in advance, if you wish to.
Depending on your circumstances and level of need, you may be offered services. There is also an opportunity to consider your situation and ask any questions that you may have.

Will I have to pay?

There is no charge for a carer’s assessment.  Most services we provide directly are free of charge.

If the person you look after needs services, they will have to pay some or all of the cost depending upon their financial circumstances.

Support for Young Carers

If you are under 18 and look after a family member, usually a parent, brother or sister, who has a disability, a serious illness, mental ill health or who has issues with substance misuse, then you are a young carer.

You might provide care in the form of basic household tasks, nursing care, or emotional support.
Monmouthshire Young Carers Project is based with Crossroads and supports young carers up to the age of 25.
The Young Carers Project provides social activities, youth clubs, training courses and advocacy for young carers.

Monmouthshire Carer’s Emergency Card

This card identifies you as a carer if you have had an accident or are unable to identify yourself.

It tells people that you are a carer and that someone depends on you to look after them.

On the reverse of the card there is space for you to put the names and contact details of two people who can be alerted and take appropriate action if needed.

  • Pick one up from the reception area in all Monmouthshire GP surgeries,
  • Telephone our carers team on 01633 644567 (Mon-Thurs)
  • Email a request to carers@monmouthshire.gov.uk
