World Wetlands Day

Celebrating Newport Wetlands & Magor Marsh for World Wetlands Day

Every year, on the 2nd February, is World Wetlands Day, celebrating the 1971 signing of the Wetlands Convention. Whilst people will be celebrating this around the World, it is worth remembering that here in the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk we have our own special corner of Wetlands along our coastline. The opening of the Wales Coast Path on May 5th will give everyone the perfect opportunity to explore this beautiful area.

Newport Wetlands

Established in 2000 and covering 437 hectares of land on the Gwent Levels, it is a haven for birdlife, from regulars such as egrets, tits and shovelers, to many seasonal birds. They even have a special section on their website devoted to recent sightings! With regular activities (including monthly walks shown on the walking section of our website) and a great visitor centre & coffee shop, it really is worth your time visiting. The above video gives a sneak peak, but bare in mind it was made in 2006, the Wetlands have improved even further in the 6 subsequent years!

Magor Marsh

Further up the Severn Estuary from Newport, is Magor Marsh. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the last remnant of fenland on the Gwent Levels, many birds flock here to live amongst the Reens. Magor Marsh also has a packed events calendar for all ages, teaching everyone about the flora and fauna of the marshlands.

With the wildlife and plantlife at both Newport and Magor changing with the seasons, they are perfect for repeat visits. So next time you are in the area consider coming over and exploring an environment completely different from the hills of the Brecon Beacons or the Valley of the Wye.
