August Bank Holiday in the Wye Valley & Vale of Usk

The last hoorah of summer, the August Bank Holiday, is almost upon us. Whilst the summer has so far decided to not embrace us fully, there is hope yet that the Bank Holiday weekend will be dry at least. But anyway, we have a list of varied activities to suit everyone in every weather condition (except snow...we don't plan for snow in the summer).

Explore the Lost City of the Legion at Caerleon

Anyone with an interest in archaeology, Romans or history in general should definatly pop on down to Caerleon. They are currently undergoing a major dig to uncover areas of the Roman City that have never previously been uncovered. The best time to visit is the bank holiday, when they will be holding special tours and exhibits of their findings as well as the chance to dress and eat as a Roman! With finds happening all the time, from jaw-bones to walls, mosaics to jewellery there should be lots to see and do.

Settle down for some great Welsh Beer, Cheese and Music at the Clytha Arms

If you would rather a weekend where the most thinking you have to do concerns which beer to sample first then the Clytha Arms Beer Cheese and Music Festival is the place for you. Operating every day of the bank weekend, with the option to camp out overnight as well, this event offers the perfect getaway from all your worries. Pop into their barn for a wide selection of beers (and often a few ciders) then settle down with some cheese and listen to great music in a convivial, relaxed atmosphere.

Laugh at others for Charity at the St. David's Hospice Foundation 'It's a Knockout' Event.

On the Sunday from 12 noon come along to Caerleon RFC and witness many sides battling through gunge, foam and inflatable obstacles in order to win the ultimate prize! It is all in aid of the St. David's Hospice Foundation and there will also be live entertainment (besides the spectacle of watching people make prats of themselves), a 'zumbathon', rugby and loads of family activities. So whether you are taking part or just coming along for the fun, a great day is guaranteed.

Travel back in time to Victorian Britain at Tredegar House

Bank Holiday Monday they are offering hourly tours around the stately house, and a chance to view displays of Baroque Dancing in the New Hall, where they would originally have been held. Or if you wish, on the Sunday there are tours around the forgotten parts of the house, the servant’s quarters and back passages, as well as complimentary afternoon tea. Lovely. So take a step back in time and appreciate this old house in Newport.

Discover the scenery and nature of Magor Marsh

On Sunday 28th Magor Marsh are offering a special chance to be guided around the area and taught about the many different kinds of fauna and flora (the plants...not the margarine) it provides a home to. The wetlands around the Severn Estuary are often forgotten, so discover for yourself this great corner of the Vale of Usk.
