Local Agenda 21 and Sustainable Development - What on Earth is it all about?
images
Local Agenda 21 is all about trying to live our lives in a way that doesn't damage the Earth in years to come by not only looking at the environmental costs, but also at how to improve people's quality of life, their health and their economic situation. images

This page is intended to give a general overview of Local Agenda 21 and sustainable development.  It includes links that provides information on the community projects that we are involved with, our grants programme and details of how we are working as a council towards a sustainable future.  If you have any questions or would like to request further information, please get in touch.

Background

Back in 1992, leaders of the world gathered in Rio to discuss the growing environmental and development problems faced by this small planet.  There, world leaders signed up to something called "Agenda 21", an action plan for the 21st Century.

Agenda 21 talks about what needs to be done to ensure a better environment and quality of life not only for people today, but also for our children and grandchildren who will inherit the earth which we will pass on.  This is called "sustainable development", and means thinking about how environmental, social and economic issues can be tackled together to share what resources the world has fairly both for people today and in the future.

It is difficult to believe that an individual or a community can make any difference at all to some of these huge problems.  But the truth is that these problems cannot be addressed without our help.  The decisions we make about how we live, what we do, what we buy and so on have strong impacts on people around the world.

Here in Monmouthshire the local authority has been working with local communities, groups and statutory bodies to make some of the changes that are desperately needed to safeguard the future of the planet.  More people and organisations are coming together to think of new and unique ways to tackle old problems to make Monmouthshire a better place to live.

Community Projects

In Monmouthshire the Local Agenda 21 Team have been working in partnership with a number of community groups, voluntary bodies and other agencies on a series of projects.

Local Agenda 21 Grants

This year we have a small grant scheme for local groups, schools and individuals.  For more information of Local Agenda 21 grants available, please click here.
