It hasn't happened yet but if it did, it could be a big problem. Few- if any - people will have any immunity to the new virus. This allows it to spread widely, easily and to cause more serious illness.
Experts predict a pandemic will occur but cannot say exactly when.
WHAT IS BEING DONE?
The Department of Health is the lead department for pandemic flu planning. A UK Influenza Pandemic Contingency Planhas been developed to ensure a co-ordinated response in the event of a UK outbreak. The Government is also stockpiling anti-virals and other equipment and are acquiring vaccines and the capacity to acquire new vaccines quickly.
