Shire Hall is a 1724 grade I listed, classically designed Georgian building. It was the scene of one of the most significant trials in British history when, in 1839/40, John Frost and other Chartists were tried for their involvement in the Chartist Riots in Newport.
Who We Are
Monmouthshire County Council and Monmouth Town Council have teamed with members of the community in Monmouth to work on a project that aims to make Shire Hall the best it can be.
As a partnership, we hope to gain expertise, time and passion from existing and new members to improve Shire Hall. We will restore the entire building to its original state and refurbish it.
The Heritage Lottery Fund Bid
Monmouthshire County Council, Monmouth Town Council and the Shire Hall Stewards made an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a heritage grant towards the cost of restoration of the building a. The stage 1 application was submitted in January 2006 and the HLF awarded a stage 1 pass in December 2006.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be £4,542,840. We are seeking a grant of £3,092,521 from HLF, which represents 68.07%.
The rest of the money will come from fundraising activities and contributions from both councils and other external bodies.
