Get rid of your clothes this Christmas
4th December 2007
This Christmas what will you do with those unwanted presents – the novelty socks, loud ties or the hand-knitted jumper from your aunty?
Monmouthshire Community Recycling (MCR) can help by making good use of your unwanted clothes whilst raising cash for charity.
For every tonne of clothes, shoes, sheets and textiles that Monmouthshire residents put into their Black Boxes from November to Easter, MCR will donate £20 to the Chairman’s charities – Abergavenny MIND and the children’s unit at hospitals in Abergavenny and Newport.
Last year, in a similar campaign, MCR donated £346 for Cancer Research Wales and the Nevill Hall Oncology Unit, the charities chosen by last year’s Chairman.
All good quality used clothing and shoes that are donated are sent to UK charities and for use in developing countries. Anything that can’t be reused is recycled into wiping cloths and filling products.
Providing materials are kept clean and dry, in bags within the boxes, MCR will be able to collect them. Shoes should be tied together in pairs.
Speaking about this project, Chairman of MCC, Councillor Chris Woodhouse said:
“If you’re given clothes for Christmas that you’d rather not be seen wearing then this is the perfect excuse to get rid of them whilst raising money for charity. Why not also use the opportunity to clear out old clothes that you may have been keeping in the back of your cupboard throughout the year?”
MCR General Manager, David Roman explained:
“A lot of reusable clothes and shoes are still going to landfill. We want people to know that we have a use for them. Please have a look through your wardrobes and if there’s something you don’t want any more – pass it on to us.”
