MONMOUTHSHIRE STUDENTS ACHIEVE GCSE SUCCESS

WJEC GCSE results showed a further improvement in Monmouthshire in 2007, building on and consolidating improvements made in previous years.

Pass rate A*-G improved to 98.3% compared with the Welsh average of 98.0%.

In all examination boards, over 55% of students in Monmouthshire’s four comprehensive schools gained 5A*-C, showing a slight improvement from last year.

County Councillor Peter Fox, Cabinet Member for Lifelong Learning and Leisure and Lead Member for Children and Young People, had the following to say:

“May I pay tribute to the efforts of all involved, particularly students, parents and teachers in ensuring that Monmouthshire has continued to maintain the standards achieved in previous years.

The number of students achieving 5A*-C increased in 2007. I know that large numbers of young people receiving their GCSE results today will be returning to the sixth forms in their schools to build on their successes.”
