Peter Jackson of Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran has been a volunteer with the Monmouthshire / Torfaen Youth Offending Team for two years. He acts as a Community Panel Member, sitting on Youth Offender Panels negotiating Contracts with first time offenders, and as a Sessional Worker, carrying out reparation work with young offenders in the Community.  The invitation to attend the reception came out of the blue last December.

The reception was held on 28th January but unfortunately, due to other urgent Parliamentary business the Prime Minister was not in attendance. Mrs Blair, Lord Bognor and a number of Junior Ministers attended on his behalf and Volunteers, Project Directors and specialists were present, tucking into drinks and nibbles.  They were thanked for their commitment to youth justice and assured that the Government was fully committed to the Youth Justice System.

The Youth Offending Team covers the Monmouthshire and Torfaen County areas and consists of workers from social services, probation, police, education, health, drugs service and others. The Team provides interventions that are targeted to the young person's needs and, by following the principles of Restorative Justice, try's to prevent any further offending.  'Reparation' is an 'activity' which is carried out by nearly all the young people referred to the Team. The young person carries out the reparation with a trained volunteer and this work could be painting local schools, clubs or other community amenities, gardening, leaflet dropping or other worthy activities.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the Monmouthshire / Torfaen Youth Offending Team or have a suggestion for community reparation, please ring Vicky Price on telephone 01495 768355.
