Well-engineered roads can help to reduce the number of road traffic accidents, which in turn will lead to a reduction in the number of casualties.
New roads are built to stringent standards to ensure that they are as safe as can reasonably be expected. However, many roads existed prior to modern design standard, road safety on these roads can often be improved by the introduction of low cost engineering schemes.
Data from reported accidents is collected and analysed. This is an important source of information for the Police and the County Council as it allows scarce resources to be focused in those areas where there are clusters of personal injury accidents or where specific trends are identified.
In order to identify theses clusters and determine the most appropriate treatment the Police, Local Authorities and Capita Gwent Consultancy have formed the accident Statistics Study Group (ASSG). The group meets regularly to discuss progress on casualty reduction, site selection and best practice. A budget of £50,000 is currently available for engineering works, which will fund approximately three such schemes.
A number of schemes have been introduced recently or are currently under consideration, including:
A48 Parkwall Roundabout eastbound approach - anti-skid material, improved signing and count down markers;
A48 Parkwall Roundabout westbound approach - improved carriageway markings and signing;
B4598 Chainbridge - improved signing;
Cinderhill Street Monmouth - small roundabout;
Huntsman Junction Shirenewton - improved signing;
A472 Llanbadoc (Agricultural College);
