Food Waste

Food waste makes up 24% of the household waste produced in Monmouthshire. It is biodegradable and so it needs to be diverted from landfill. The WormTech compost facility in Caerwent has now expanded to include food waste, including meat waste.
In order to divert the food waste generated, a collection programme has been introduced in the south of the county as part of the green waste service. Future expansion to the north of the county is likely.
Plastics

Monmouthshire County Coucil offer limited facilities for plastic bottle recycling in the form of banks and there are several kerbside trials also taking place with Monmouthshire Community Recycling. However, there are no immediate plans to expand this service due to the high cost of collections. Local Authorities recycling performance is judged by the weight of materials they collect. Plastic packaging is light weight and consists of many different types. Therefore transporting and sorting this material for recycling is very expensive compared to other elements of the waste stream such as bio-degradable waste which is a priority for Monmouthshire.
Collections

As recycling schemes expand to cover more of the County and the people of Monmouthshire adopt and accept the changes, there will be less residual, or black bag, waste produced. Monmouthshire County Council are considering altering collection regularity and types of containers and will consult widely on these options.
