Photo of shopping at the checkout of a supermarket

You can make a difference by considering the way in which you shop. Try to avoid pre-packed fruit and vegetables and products with excess packaging.  Approximately a quarter of our waste is packaging, if you don’t buy it, it won’t become rubbish!

Exercise your consumer power by choosing to buy products with surplus packaging.  Don’t be afraid to write to the manufacturer if you think their packaging is excessive.

Instead of taking home more carrier bags every time you visit the supermarket, why not use re-usable shopping bags. Some supermarkets have them on sale and will replace them free of charge should they break.

If you do not have a kerbside collection of recyclables a number of supermarkets in the County have Recycling Centres in their car parks, so next time you go shopping why not drop off your empty bottles and old newspapers?

The locations of the Recycling Centres and Civic Amenity
Sites are listed in the "Where can you recycle?" section of these pages.
