We offer free professional advice on planning matters and we encourage early discussion of proposals. This can help sort out problems and lead to a speedier decision.

Planning staff are available at County Hall on Wednesdays by appointment to deal with general enquiries. Please ring 01633 644880 to make an appointment.

A planning officer will also be available at the Planning surgeries held every two weeks in the Council's One Stop Shops at the following times:
Bryn-y-cwm, Abergavenny Thursday 2 - 4 pm.
Lower Wye, Chepstow Tuesday 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Severnside, Caldicot Thursday 2 - 4 pm
Central Monmouthshire Monmouth every Tuesday 2 - 4 pm

You should contact the relevant One Stop Shop to make an appointment.

We are happy to give verbal advice at these surgeries and over the telephone, however, everyone should realise that advice of this nature is informal and is not a commitment by the Council to grant planning permission.

If you want formal advice from the Council then you should write to us specifying what you propose and any plans where appropriate.  You can use this form.  We will give you a written response within the timescales set out in our Corporate Customer Care Standards that will include a research of the site’s planning history and a site inspection.  Our response will be binding on officers of the Council unless representations from external bodies raise material considerations of which we were not aware at the time of writing to you.  The response will not commit Planning Committee to any particular decision.  There is no charge for this advice.

A useful document that gives advice and general guidance for works to dwellings is "Planning - A Guide for House Holders" available from The National Assembly for Wales.

A planning officer can visit you at home if you are unable to reach one of the Council's offices for disability reasons.
