What is an abandoned vehicle?

The fact that a vehicle is untaxed does not mean it is abandoned. The enforcement authority for untaxed vehicles left on the public highway is the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Vehicles are classed as abandoned when:
* They have not been moved for a long period of time
* The tax has expired
* There is a danger to the public because the windows are smashed, the doors are open, wheels are missing etc. or the vehicle has been subject to arson.

How to report an abandoned vehicle
If you think a vehicle is abandoned you can report it by phone, email or by completing a form online. To report an abandoned vehicle online click here. Reporting an Abandoned Vehicle If you are reporting an abandoned vehicle by phone, you may do so by phoning the nearest Area Office listed above. Please be ready to provide the following details:

* Your name and daytime phone number
* The registration number of the vehicle (if one is visible)
* The make and model of the vehicle (if known)
* The colour of the vehicle
* Exact location of the vehicle
* Confirmation that the vehicle is not taxed (if possible)

What happens when a vehicle is reported?

We aim to inspect the vehicle without unnecessary delay. If we think the vehicle might be abandoned, we will attach a notice to it, asking for the owner to claim it. Upon receipt of registered keeper details from the DVLA, if the vehicle has not been claimed or moved, we will inspect it again and then remove it. We aim to remove dangerous or burnt out cars as quickly as reasonably possible.

The Dangers of Burnt Out Vehicles
Burnt out vehicles are dangerous due to the residue of dangerous chemicals, which can result in serious injury and amputations.

Labeled Vehicles
If you have recently had a vehicle labeled with a statutory notice and wish to notify us that the vehicle is in fact not abandoned you must take the following action immediately.

Contact the nearest Area Office, which are listed above, confirming that you wish to claim the vehicle in question, and are able to produce the relevant documentation that confirms that you are the legal owner of the vehicle.
