It is the Council's responsibility to maintain public rights of way to ensure that the routes remain open for the ease of enjoyment by the public.

The landowners responsibilities are to:-

  • Remove any vegetation emanating from their boundary fence or hedge that has overgrown and is obstructing the public right of way.
  • The boundary fence or hedgerow protecting the landowner's interest may have public right of way furniture within it.  This furniture is the landowner's responsibility to maintain.

The Highway Authorities responsibilities are to:-

  • Remove any vegetation growing from the surface of the public right of way that may obstruct the way.
  • Maintain the surface of the way suitable to the type of use and status of the way.
