What is the Definitive Map and Statement?
The Definitive Map of Public Rights of Way defines the legal network (Byways, Bridleway and Footpaths), through which the public can enjoy the countryside. It is a legal document and the legislation underpinning its publication provides the framework for all Rights of Way work.
The Definitive Map is conclusive evidence that the paths shown on it are beyond dispute and are public paths, which should be available for use every day of the year.
The Definitive Statement gives a general description and map reference to all paths shown on the Definitive Map.
The Countryside Access team carries out the Council's responsibility to maintain and update the Definitive Map and Statement.
The Definitive Map in Monmouthshire has a relevant date of 1st July 1952. However it was not published until 3rd November 1967. No paths on the Definitive Map can be altered in anway unless a legal order is made.
The County Council is currently updating the Definitive Map by the production of a series of Legal Event Modification Orders. Once these are complete a new Definitive Map and Statement will be produced on a 1:10,000 scale.
