We aim to provide “joined up” countryside services, including:
- Providing and managing countryside sites and facilities;
- Managing the public rights of way network, and countryside access;
- Protecting trees and hedgerows;
- Protecting and enhancing biodiversity;
- Conserving and enhancing the landscape;
- Supporting the Wye Valley AONB partnership; and
- Providing activities, events and education programme.
The Monmouthshire Countryside Strategy was approved in 1998 and although it now requires review, particularly to reflect the many legislative changes introduced by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, it still provides much of the context for the service’s work. The strategy contains the following vision:
- “We want to sustain a countryside of great natural diversity, in which those local characteristics giving Monmouthshire its special environmental qualities are safeguarded, and in which wildlife is protected and encouraged to increase to sustainable levels. All people should have the opportunities to derive enjoyment from a better understanding of and access to the countryside and to be involved directly in its protection and enhancement.”
We hope to review the strategy in the near future.
