What do schools have to do?

images Each school must take on three Healthy Schools Actions per year for the first three years. Schools are then required to take on one action for every two year period whilst ensuring that 6 out of their previous 9 actions are sustainable.

Examples of actions include:

  • Setting up a fruit tuck shop/healthy break time snacks only/free KS1 milk at break time
  • Water @ desks
  • A whole school approach to circle time
  • Recycling
  • Becoming an eco-school
  • PSE auditing and mapping
  • Setting up a breakfast club
  • Active play times/structured outdoor play/playground zoning/training lunchtime supervisors in traditional playground games
  • Setting up an effective school council
  • Peer support/playground buddies
  • A high profile health event /health week/food and fitness day

At least two of the annual healthy schools actions must be sustainable. One of the actions can be a one-off/high profile event which does not have to be revisited.

When schools reach Phases 4-7 they must take at least 2 years to complete one action. These actions can be in the form of a project, for example the eco-schools green flag, a whole school approach to healthy eating, a whole school approach to mental health and well being or a whole school integrated and progressive approach to PSE.

Each school must complete;

An action plan for each action (some model plans are available)
An Annual Review
In order to become accredited, a portfolio of evidence must be produced (with at least four pieces of evidence per action),  or a visit must be arranged to demonstrate how a school is meeting its actions.
