Mr Ken Jacob, Headteacher, together with pupils from Caldicot Green Lane Junior School receiving their Phase 2 award.

Mr Ken Jacob, Headteacher at Caldicot Green Lane Junior School, received the Monmouthshire Healthy Schools Award for Phase 2. The school has worked incredibly hard since starting the scheme in early 2006 and has developed their school council, a water@desks policy and a fruit tuck shop. For Phase 2 of the scheme the school has successfully implemented a recycling scheme, ‘minilympics’ and developing after school clubs.

The school are now well on their way with Phase 3. Congratulations and well done to all the staff and pupils at the school and the in-school co-ordinator Mrs Farrandes.

A pupil from Ysgol Y Fenni with their delicious meal.

The Food Standards Agency “Cooking Bus” visited Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni during the week of 5 March 2007.
The bus has been developed in partnership with the Focus on Food Campaign to get across healthy eating and food safety messages to school children in an engaging way. The bus opens out to provide a fully equipped state-of-the-art classroom/kitchen for 16 students.
The workshops for pupils were hands-on events, with children making finished dishes to eat there and then, or to take home for tea. A community session also gave parents the opportunity to learn more about tasty healthy food ideas.

The free water bottles, provided by Health Challenge Wales.

Monmouthshire Health Alliance has used Health Challenge Wales funds to purchase clear reusable water bottles for one class in every primary school in Monmouthshire, to help encourage young children to drink more water. Children need to drink at least three to four glasses of water per day whilst at school and even more when exercising or in warm weather. Drinking water throughout the day is an important way of protecting health and contributing to well-being and can boost pupil performance – when we are thirsty our mental performance declines by ten percent.

For further information on the benefits of drinking water please refer to the  “Think Water” guide
