Housing Benefit
Anyone who lives in the Monmouthshire area and is liable to pay rent for the home they occupy can make a claim for Housing Benefit.
These include:
- Public Sector (Council) Tenants
- Private Sector Tenants
- Tenants with private Landlords
- Housing Association tenants
- Boarders
- Hostel dwellers
- Co-ownership schemes
You cannot claim housing benefit if you rent from a close relative i.e. parent, step parent, brother, sister, son, daughter, son/daughter-in-law, step son/daughter or the partner of any of the above if they reside in the same property as yourself.
Council Tax Benefit
To claim Council Tax Benefit you must be liable to pay the Council Tax and reside in the property.
Discretionary Hardship Payment
If you are successfully awarded housing and/or Council Tax benefit, but not at the maximum level, you may apply for an award of discretionary hardship payment.
This is awarded in exceptional circumstances where claimants are suffering financial hardship, e.g. where housing benefit is calculated on an amount lower than the actual rental charge.
Application forms for a discretionary hardship payment are available on request from the Benefit Section at County Hall.
