LOCAL HOUSING ALLOWANCE (LHA) is a new way of working out Housing Benefit for private tenants.

LHA will be introduced on 7 April 2008 and is based on the area you live in and who lives with you.

There are no changes to the entitlement rules - this will continue to be based on your income and savings and proof of a valid tenancy.

LHA WILL ONLY APPLY TO TENANTS WHO:
  • Make a new claim for Housing Benefit
  • Change Address
  • Have a break in their claim after 7 April 2008

LHA will only apply to tenants who are in the private rental sector. It will not affect Housing Association tenants.
