Many landlords ask for a bond (or deposit) from tenants before they move into a property. This is a sum of money which will cover any damage, loss or rent arrears. The bond should be returned to the tenant
at the end of the tenancy providing the property is in a good condition and the rent is up to date.
If you can't afford to pay the bond Right Move may help by guaranteeing that it will pay the landlord a certain amount if there is any damage, theft or rent arrears. Some landlords are willing to accept this instead of cash and it means you can move into a property if you can't afford the bond yourself. The bond guarantee is available to anyone who is on a low income, who is homeless or threatened with homelessness and currently resident within Monmouthshire.
As well as asking for a bond some landlords ask for rent in advance. If you can't afford to pay the rent in advance yourself you may be able to get a Crisis Loan or Budgeting Loan from the Benefits Agency. Details
and application forms are available from the Benefits Agency or Job Centres.
