Adult Learners’ Week, led by the Learning and Work Institute, invites organisations and communities across Wales to take part in adult learning activities to showcase the wide range of opportunities available to adults hoping to continue or return to learning. The aim this campaign is to raise awareness of the value of adult learning, celebrate the achievements of learners and providers, and inspire more people to discover how learning can positively change their lives.

Throughout the week of the 18th June 2018, Monmouthshire Community Learning celebrated ‘Adult Learners week’.  As part of that we ran 43 free taster sessions throughout our five venues in Monmouthshire providing opportunities for people to come and try something new by having a go at a practical skill, or trying a bite-size taster session. Over the week 190 people attended the sessions with 102 people signing up for a future course as a result.

We hosted a wide range of sessions including; foreign languages, digital support (Computing skills, IPad/tablet or digital camera), British Sign Language, plus a variety of different arts and crafts sessions and Holistic Therapies. Also, alongside the taster sessions we exhibited learners’ work, celebrating the wonderful achievements learners have made by attending a course with us in the past or currently.

These events allowed us to actively promote participation in learning, allowing us to truly demonstrate what Community Learning provides in Monmouthshire. Our events especially benefited individuals who we have previously struggled to engage with and who may not have considered attending a class previously and aiding us in engaging with learners and supporting them to progress onto courses to further develop their skills and knowledge.

Also, throughout Adult Learners week re-launched our new marketing material officially which comprises of a new look website (Still under construction), course posters/leaflets and site specific brochures, giving new and prospective learners a tour of our new marketing materials and gaining their feedback so that we can make sure we are providing all the information they require.

Overall, Adult Learners Week in Monmouthshire was a resounding success building on previous years and clearly communicating our continued commitment to Adult and Community Learning in the county. Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible, we are already looking forward to next year!
